Weight vs balance: two different numbers


Every racket spec sheet lists a weight in grams, and most list a balance point in millimetres measured from the butt cap (the bottom of the handle). Players often treat these as the same thing. They aren’t.

Two rackets can both weigh 360 g and feel completely different. One with its balance at 255 mm carries more of that mass near your hand: it’s easy to whip around on a fast volley exchange, and it forgives late preparation. One at 285 mm carries it in the head: it drives through a bandeja or a flat smash with less effort from you, but it’s slower to bring back into position.

A common way to group rackets:

  • Under 265 mm — head-light, control-oriented
  • 265–275 mm — even balance
  • Over 275 mm — head-heavy, power-oriented

Manufacturer figures are a starting point, not gospel. Production tolerances mean two rackets of the same model can differ by several grams, which is why measuring your own frame (see below) is worth ten minutes.

What the rules allow

Customization is legal. The International Padel Federation’s official Rules of Padel cap the racket at 45.5 cm total length (handle max 20 cm), 26 cm width and 38 mm thickness. The rules also say the racket must be free of attached objects except those used to prevent deterioration, reduce vibration or distribute weight — provided they are reasonable in size and placement. Frame protectors, dampeners and lead tape all fall inside that wording. Reflective surfaces or anything that makes noise do not.

The mandatory wrist cord (non-elastic, max 35 cm) is part of the racket too. It sits at the butt, so it has almost no effect on balance.

Where each addition sits — and what it does

Overgrips: pulls balance towards the handle

An overgrip wraps the handle, so its mass sits roughly 8 cm from the butt cap. Adding one makes the racket slightly heavier but more head-light, which is why a freshly re-gripped racket can feel quicker even though it weighs more. Frame protectors: pushes balance towards the tip

A protector tape runs around the top of the frame — the part that scrapes the glass and the floor. Because it sits near the very end of the racket (around 43–44 cm from the butt), even a few grams shift the balance forward. Many players fit one to save a new racket and are surprised it suddenly feels heavier on volleys.

Lead tape: precise, and position is everything

Lead tape lets you add weight exactly where you want it:

  • 12 o’clock (top of head) — maximum shift towards the tip. More plow-through on overheads, slower hands at the net.
  • 10 and 2 o’clock — adds power while widening the effective sweet spot and improving stability on off-centre hits.
  • 3 and 9 o’clock — mainly stability against twisting on off-centre contact; smaller balance shift.
  • Throat / heart — adds mass with little change to balance. Makes the racket more solid without making it head-heavy.
  • Handle — counterweight. Moves balance back towards the hand; useful to cancel out a protector.

Worked examples: how many millimetres does it actually move?

The maths is a weighted average: each item’s mass multiplied by its distance from the butt, added to the racket’s own mass multiplied by its balance point, then divided by the new total weight. The examples below use a hypothetical 360 g racket balanced at 265 mm — the edge between “control” and “even”. Plug in your own frame’s numbers to get real results.

Two things stand out. First, the two-overgrip example moves the balance further than the protector does — a racket sold as “even” can turn head-light just from grip layering. Second, the last row shows that balance can stay almost unchanged while the racket gets 14 g heavier. Same balance, more mass at both ends: the racket will feel more stable but also more tiring over a long match, because it takes more effort to swing.

How to measure your own racket at home

  1. Weight. Put the racket on a kitchen scale with 1 g resolution. Weigh it the way you play with it — grip, protector and cord on — then note which items are included.
  2. Balance. Lay a thin straight edge on a table (a steel ruler on its side works). Place the racket across it, face flat, and slide it until it balances level. Measure from the butt cap to the contact point in millimetres.
  3. Repeat twice. If your two readings differ by more than 2 mm, redo it — a 1–2 mm error is easy to make and roughly the size of a small customization.

Practical rules of thumb

  • Change one thing at a time and play at least two sessions before judging it. Your first reaction to a heavier head is usually “more power”; the timing cost shows up later in the match.
  • Add small amounts. 2–4 g of lead tape is plenty for a first test. It’s easier to add than to peel off cleanly.
  • Tape symmetrically. Uneven placement makes the face want to twist on contact.
  • Defensive players at the back glass — the ones hitting a lot of bajadas and lobs — tend to benefit from control and quick hands more than from a heavy head.
  • Arm or elbow pain? Adding head weight is the wrong direction. Stop experimenting and see a physio before changing your setup further.

Bottom line

Customizing a padel racket is cheap, legal and reversible, but it isn’t intuitive: an extra overgrip makes a racket feel lighter, and 8 g on the frame can move it into a different category. Measure your racket, run the numbers before you stick anything on, change one variable at a time — and let the results on court, not the spec sheet, decide what stays.
